How to prepare untreated wood for painting. Raw wood panels need to be sealed prior to priming and painting to keep moisture from getting to the wood which causes warping and other damage. Let the first coat dry completely then rub it down gently with fine grit sandpaper. This is how I prepare my unfinished wood so I get a nice smooth finish for painting.
Begin by scraping off old paints. Clean the surface from dust. Of course if this sounds like too much hassle or hard work you can always call in the professionals.
Give the surface a full day to dry before moving on. Choose the correct primer for the job by reading the label prior to purchasing it or asking the person at the paint desk to help ensure a paint job that is durable smooth and uniform. For stubborn dirt and grease use warm soapy water but avoid harsh chemicals.
Water-based primers are more common. You can apply primer with a brush roller or by spraying and one coat is all you need. Use a long-handled scrubber brush and a mild detergent to gently scrub away accumulated dirt grime mold and other residue.
They smell less as well as leaving your brushes easier to clean. Then add a second coat and again rub it down. To clean your piece of furniture before painting use a damp cloth and wipe over the surface.
If you see a stain. Whatever youre painting has to be clean of any grease dirt or debris before you can paint it. Wipe it with a cloth soaked in white spirit.
